Did you know that ambient scent can be an effective craving deterrent? Want to know what ambient scent is and how it can stop your food cravings? Read on…
We’ve all been there, whether it’s just past midnight after a night out with friends or a 3pm office run. When food cravings hit, it’s a struggle to try to fend them off. Particularly if you’ve had a stressful week or are feeling run down.
Why do we get food cravings?
Food cravings can often be emotionally based of due to an imbalance of hormones. Stress levels, water intake, lack of sleep and the amount of protein in your diet can also have an influence over your food cravings. So how can you stop your food cravings if they hit?
Ambient Scent Studies by the University of Florida
Recent studies conducted by the University of Florida have somewhat proved the effectiveness of ambient scent at dissuading food cravings. Did you ever work at a fast food outlet or waffle house when you were younger? Do you remember becoming somewhat sick of the smell after working there for some time? This is the theory the study was based on.
What is ambient scent?
Participants in the study were subjected to healthy and unhealthy odours, such as fruit or cookies, that were delivered in a cafeteria area or in the supermarket. The results showed that regardless of where the participant was located, if they smelled a cookie for 30 seconds or less, they then craved that food. If they were subject to the scent for over 2 minutes, they opted for a healthier food choice, such as the fruit instead.
“Ambient scent can be a powerful tool to resist cravings for indulgent foods,” the study’s lead author Dipayan Biswas said in a statement.
“In essence, if reward structures and areas representing craving in the brain can be satisfied with olfactory inputs instead of actual gustatory consumption of unhealthy foods, this can help with fighting food urges.”
Basically, next time you are on a night out with your friends and they are all headed to the kebab store, hang around out the front for a couple minutes, get in a taxi and head home. Your body will thank you in the morning!
