The new health buzz word “Synbiotics”
If you like to educate yourself on health and fitness, you may have come across a new buzz word in the industry “Synbiotics.” But what does it mean? And is it just a fad?
If you read our blog you would have read that we love probiotics to help maintain a healthy gut (amongst other things but you can read about how to get a healthy gut here).
What are Probiotics and Prebiotics?
Probiotics work to help eliminate bad bacteria in your gut, in turn aiding with your digestion and keeping your overall gut healthy. Your diet can also help to supplement the good bacteria in your gut. Foods such as green bananas, asparagus, and artichokes contain prebiotics. Prebiotics are nondigestible carbohydrates that feed the good bacteria in your stomach. Both probiotics and prebiotics are an essential part of your diet.
But what are Synbiotics?
Synbiotics are prebiotics added to a probiotic supplement. We guess you could call it a hybrid? And why are synbiotics potentially better that the two separated?
Researchers believe that probiotics may encounter survival difficulties when passing through your digestional tract. Some may not even make it to your gut. Adding prebiotics to your probiotics, can help ensure that the digestion-friendly microorganisms arrive to do their job.
How well has this “synbiotics” theory been tested?
“Because probiotics and prebiotics work together, synbiotics may be very important,” explains Cynthia Sass, RD, Health contributing nutrition editor. “But right now we don’t have a lot of data to show that synbiotics are more effective than, say, taking probiotics and eating a diet rich in prebiotics.”
“Right now my primary concern is the limited research and the lack of regulation in terms of guaranteeing that a product you buy is actually synbiotic and effective,” says Sass.
Should we be racing to the stores to buy this new fad “synbiotics”?
Unfortunately, most people are gunning for the next easy health kick but when it comes to their health. The proven theory is to take your probiotics daily and supplement your diet with prebiotic rich foods.
